What Is Food Grade Fulfillment and Do You Actually Need It?
Most brands find out they need food grade fulfillment the hard way — either a retailer requires it, Amazon flags their product, or they get into an audit and realize their 3PL’s warehouse isn’t set up to store food or supplement products properly.
So let me break it down plainly: what food grade fulfillment actually means, what it requires, and whether you need it.
What Makes Fulfillment “Food Grade”
Standard fulfillment is built around boxes and pallets. Product comes in, gets scanned into inventory, gets picked when an order comes in, gets packed, gets shipped. The warehouse environment itself usually isn’t a regulated consideration.
Food grade fulfillment adds requirements around the storage environment. Temperature and humidity control — because food and supplement products can degrade, clump, or go bad if stored outside their specification. Pest control — because a fulfillment center with inadequate pest exclusion can compromise your product. Off-floor storage — your pallets need to be on racking, not sitting on a concrete floor where moisture and pests can reach them. Lot traceability — you need to know which lot of product went into which orders, because if you have a recall, you need to trace affected units to specific customers.
For dietary supplement brands, 21 CFR Part 111 has specific requirements around storage conditions and traceability that extend beyond the production facility to wherever your finished product lives.
What Amazon Specifically Requires
If you’re selling supplements on Amazon, your co-packer must be FDA registered. That’s a bright line. But Amazon also has storage requirements for supplement and food products at their fulfillment centers, and they can — and do — remove listings when products fail compliance checks.
More importantly: if something goes wrong and Amazon asks you to trace affected units, you need to be able to do it. If your fulfillment partner doesn’t maintain lot-level inventory records, you can’t. That’s a serious problem in a recall scenario.
What This Looks Like in Practice
At North Lakes, food grade fulfillment means your product is stored in a climate-controlled environment with temperature and humidity monitoring. It means off-floor racking, not floor pallets. It means a licensed pest control contractor servicing the facility on a regular schedule. It means we maintain lot-level inventory records — we know which lot of your product we picked for every order that ships.
It also means your product is stored alongside other food and supplement brands, not mixed into a general merchandise warehouse where someone’s storing automotive parts in the next bay.
Do You Need Food Grade Fulfillment?
If you’re selling food or supplement products, the answer is yes — even if nobody has explicitly told you that yet. The question is whether the requirement is being enforced on you right now. Amazon, major retailers, and regulatory audits can all surface this requirement, and the time to be compliant is before you’re being asked to prove it.
Our published rates
$45 per pallet per month storage. $3.00 per order pick and pack. Carrier cost passed through at actual rate — no markup. No platform fee. No monthly minimum. That’s the whole model.
Food grade fulfillment doesn’t have to cost more than standard fulfillment if you find the right partner. Those numbers above are real — not a starting point for a negotiation. — Ole
