Pre-blended vs. bulk ingredients — which is cheaper for your supplement run?
Every powder run starts with the same question: does your product show up at our dock already blended, or does it show up as a pallet of individual ingredients that we blend for you? Both work. They cost different amounts, they need different paperwork, and for supplements the answer changes how much identity testing you pay for.
Here's how each path works at North Lakes, what it costs, and how to pick.
Path 1: You send a finished, pre-blended powder
Your blend arrives ready to fill — made in-house or by a dedicated blending partner. We dump it in the hopper and pack it. That's why we call it "dump and pack."
What we need from you:
- Your blend specification sheet — what's in it, the target fill weight, and the specs the finished powder should meet.
- A COA for the lot you ship.
- The powder on site at least 7 days before your run date, like every other material.
What it costs at North Lakes: the standard run price — $2,750 flat for sachets and stick packs up to 8,000 units. No blending charge, because there's nothing to blend, and no identity testing fee. Ingredient-level identity testing belongs to whoever made the blend.
What it costs you elsewhere: your blender's fee, their minimum batch size, and the freight from their dock to ours. Those aren't on our invoice, but they're real — put them in the comparison.
Path 2: You send bulk ingredients and we blend
Your ingredients arrive separately, each with its own supplier and lot number. We blend them to your formula and fill the same day.
Blending: included in the $2,750 flat rate for runs up to 8,000 units. For larger runs or blend-only jobs, it's $0.50–$1.50 per pound depending on the number of ingredients, particle size, and mix time.
Identity testing (supplements only): when we blend a dietary supplement, we're the manufacturer — and 21 CFR 111.75(a)(1) requires an identity test on every lot of every dietary ingredient before it goes into the blender. That's $225 per dietary-ingredient lot. A supplier's COA doesn't replace it, even one from an ISO 17025 lab.
Flavors, sweeteners, colors, and flow agents aren't dietary ingredients. For those we rely on a qualified supplier's lot-specific COA, so they don't carry the fee. And if your product is a conventional food rather than a supplement — say, a drink mix sold as food — the identity testing fee doesn't apply at all.
More detail on what counts as a dietary ingredient is in our identity testing guide.
Side by side: a 5,000-sachet supplement run
Say your formula has four dietary ingredients (each arriving as one lot), plus a flavor and a sweetener:
| Cost | Pre-blended | We blend |
|---|---|---|
| Production run (up to 8,000 units) | $2,750 | $2,750 |
| Blending | Your blender's fee | Included |
| Identity testing — 4 dietary-ingredient lots × $225 | $0 | $900 |
| Flavor and sweetener | $0 | Supplier COAs — no fee |
| Extra freight leg (blender → North Lakes) | Yes | No |
| North Lakes invoice | $2,750 | $3,650 |
So pre-blended is cheaper on our invoice by $900. Whether it's cheaper overall depends on what your blender charges, their minimum batch, and the extra freight. If your blender's fee plus freight is under $900, pre-blending wins. If you'd be buying a 1,000 kg minimum batch to fill 5,000 sachets, it probably doesn't.
Pre-blended saves the identity testing fee. Blending with us saves a vendor, a freight leg, and a minimum batch. Price both.
How to choose
Pre-blended usually makes sense when:
- You already have a blending partner you trust, with good documentation.
- Your formula has many dietary ingredients — six lots at $225 is $1,350 per run.
- You want to keep your exact formula in fewer hands.
Having us blend usually makes sense when:
- You're running small — under 8,000 units, blending is already in the flat rate.
- Your formula has only one or two dietary ingredients, or it's a conventional food.
- You're still adjusting the formula and don't want to commit to a blender's minimum.
- You'd rather manage one partner and one freight schedule.
Two ways to keep the testing bill down if we blend
- Ask your supplier to ship a single lot. The fee is per lot received, so one ingredient split across two lots means two tests.
- Buy enough for more than one run. If the next run uses the same lot we already tested and it's still in our warehouse, it doesn't need a new test.
Already a North Lakes client? The spec builder in the client portal asks which path you're on. Pick "pre-blended" and it asks for your blend spec sheet; pick "bulk ingredients" on a supplement run and it shows the identity testing fee for each dietary ingredient before you submit.
